As one found in the history of the world that the society has been constantly changing, one could now imagine how much changes the press has undergone. It is true that the history of the press cannot be separated from the history of the nation , in which the press exists. If one wants to study the trends of the press in the past, one must study the history of the nation as well.

It was found in the United Stattes of America that, since the country has risen to the present position as a world power, the media of communication have changed in scope, in appearance, in contents, in style, in functions and in policies.

All the changes will also be found in newspapers in every country. For example, …press in this part of the subcontinent which is Pakistan was the most important spokesman for freedom before 1947. But after the country achieved independence the press has assumed a role as to keep vigilance on the rulers and the ruled both.

As a society changes, it becomes more and more complicated. The people are now dealing with new conditions in public affairs, with the state of mind during a national crisis, consequently, the press is forced to evolve into the agency of mass communication through technological changes.

In these circumstances, there is every reason for the press and the people interested in the welfare of the society to study the press and prepare themselves for any eventuality.

The press cannot exit to serve the public long if its producer does not study the attitude, opinion and taste of the readers and then, try to improve the quality of his commodity in accordance with those attitudes and tastes. The consumers of the newspaper or the readers, should also keep themselves abreast of all development, monitions and changes in journalistic field so that they can interpret accurately events and opinions expressed on the newspaper pages.
