Toyota Teases New Celica, MR2, Supra and More Coming Soon
Toyota may bring back iconic sports cars like the Celica and MR2, along with new versions of the Supra and GR86. This hint came from Toyota’s anime-style show “Grip,” where a whiteboard shows model names like “Supra Mk6,” “Celica Mk8,” and “MR2 Mk4.”
Toyota’s Gazoo Racing (GR) lineup includes models like the Supra, GR86, and GR Yaris. If the Celica and MR2 return, they’ll likely be part of the GR family, with a focus on performance.
An all-electric sports car concept, the FT-Se, shown last year, has a low and compact design. It could serve as the basis for a new MR2 with Toyota’s slim battery units, achieving a style like the original MR2.
The Celica, produced from 1971 to 2006, has a longer history. Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda has shown interest in reviving it, although its place in the lineup next to the GR86 is still uncertain.
A new version of the Supra is expected, as the current model debuted in 2019. Meanwhile, a redesign for the GR86, launched in 2022, might include hybrid technology, using a turbocharged engine similar to that in the GR Yaris.
Toyota’s GR GT3 supercar, first seen in 2022, has already been tested. This lineup expansion could fulfill Akio Toyoda’s vision of reuniting the “three brothers” — the Celica, MR2, and Supra.
