Toyota and Suzuki Partner to Develop Electric SUV
Toyota has confirmed plans to release an electric vehicle (EV) developed in partnership with Suzuki, marking a significant step in their collaboration. This new electric SUV, set for production in India starting next spring, will be the first Suzuki-designed model offered globally by Toyota.
Previously, Toyota had partnered with Suzuki to allow some Toyota models, like the Corolla Touring Sports and RAV4, to be rebranded and sold as Suzuki cars in Europe, while some Suzuki models have been rebadged as Toyotas in other markets. However, this upcoming electric SUV takes the partnership further.
The new Toyota model is expected to be a version of the Suzuki eVX, first showcased at the Auto Expo in Delhi. The Toyota Urban SUV concept shares similar design elements, such as proportions and the shape of its C-pillars, with the eVX.
Toyota noted that this EV platform was developed jointly with Suzuki and microcar maker Daihatsu. It will feature four-wheel drive and is designed to perform well on rough terrains, combining durability with efficient driveability.
Toyota’s president, Koji Sato, expressed excitement about this step forward in their electrification collaboration, while Suzuki’s president, Toshihiro Suzuki, voiced appreciation for the deepening partnership, as Suzuki prepares to supply its first BEV (battery electric vehicle) globally through Toyota.
